In my restless dreams, I see that town. Silent Hill. You promised you’d take me there again someday. But you never did. Well I’m alone there now… In our ‘special place’… Waiting for you…

We stopped freaking out about the “Oh my god, women want to wear pants!” thing a really long time ago. Women wandered into the traditionally masculine realms of self-expression and ambition and now it’s just normal.

Not so with masculinity. It is still as rigid and well defended as ever, despite a few David Bowies or Johnny Depps in the mix. Just look at last year’s total freaking meltdown about a J. Crew catalog that carried a photo of a woman painting her young son’s toenails. Just look at the way the more delicate boys of the world are bullied by their classmates and accused of being gay. Just look at the gender imbalance in the diagnosis of Gender Identity Disorder in children, with gender disordered pre-pubescent boys outnumbering girls at a rate of up to 30 to 1. When a girl is boyish, or even claims she’d rather be a boy, it’s cute. She’s a tomboy. When a boy is girlish, wanting to wear dresses or try on some makeup, it’s a mental disorder and needs an immediate medical intervention.

Reblog if you have mourned the death of a fictional character.

Let’s talk about why Assassin’s Creed is so flippin’ awesome.

thearcanetheory:

I’m not talking about how smooth the gameplay is, the gorgeoussness of the graphics, or the badass story line. Ok, well, the story line is a huge part of it.

But seriously, can I just say that this game is so racially diverse. And it’s not treated as thing, no way, it’s like, yeah this guy has some badass important ancestors, and oh well they happen to be not all of them white, but who the fuck cares, let’s go kill some Templars. The protagonist of the story is Desmond, a seemingly white guy (possibly racially mixed? For a paler guy, it’s a bit hard to define), fine. But let’s face it, you spend much of the game as one ancestor of his or another. And game #1? The first one that set the stage and got the nation freakin’ crazy in the first place? Arab hero. In a time when the US is embroiled in some really nasty activities in the Middle East and Asia, in a post 9/11 culture that loves to give Arabs and Muslims, and just anyone brown a whole bunch of shit for existing, we have an Arab hero. (BTW, the Assassins are a real thing. Really.)

And now, we have another non-white ancestor, a half-Native in the time when the colonies were fighting for their independence - and continually erasing that of the indigenous people (something still relevant today, btw.)

And at the same time, we get a half-French WoC Assassin down in New Orleans and just.

I love this franchise. So much. Because including these characters was done as a matter of course, not as a bone thrown to the non-white communities. There’s no “oh look how diverse we are! Tee hee!” No nasty stereotypes. Just badass people in the canvas of history who just so happen to be super badass and important and not at all white.

And white folks aren’t even complaining about it.
